Exhibition of ceramic pillows in Museum of the Western Han Dynasty Mausoleum of the Nanyue King.

Museum of the Western Han Dynasty Mausoleum of the Nanyue King is famous for its rich collection of ceramic pillows. The 200+ pillows specially exhibited on the second floor of the museum were donated by renown Hong Kong entrepreneur and collector, Mr. Young Wing Tak and his wife Mrs. Young Cheung Shui Ching. After 26 years of display, the Special Exhibition of the Ceramic Pillows Donated by Mr. and Mrs Young Wing Tak has become a unique attraction of the museum.

Relicase was assigned to renovate the exhibition hall for the ceramic pillows in June, 2019. After 4 months of intense work, we managed to design, manufacture, deliver and install showcases, decoration, and lighting for the entire exhibition hall, achieving its re-opening date on October 1st , 2019.

We created a sense of integrity with ingenious designs: the exhibition hall was shaped into a corridor with twists and turns by a full line up of showcases. The roundabout style resembles the river of time. Whole dressing panels were bent at the edges to conceal the seams, leaving a fairly neat surface. Access panels of for the base compartments were hidden in the rear to enable maintenance without opening the main display area. The selection over materials, color combination, and lighting systems all reflect our uniqueness in design and craft.

We created a dark tone by using large area of charcoal gray in the background and an internal plinth to accentuate the colors and glazes on the ceramic. Lighting is another important factor to achieve the display effect. We incorporated dimmable built-in wall washers and spotlights to manage a precise control over the space environment and to create highlights.

Imported low-reflective laminated glass gave our showcases glare-free views while providing perfect protection, leaving the pillows seemingly barrier-free. These become not caged objects, but messengers of traditional Chinese culture passed down from thousands of years.
