The Henan Museum is a history and archaeology museum, located in Zhengzhou, Henan, China. The museum is one of the three major museums in China, and the largest center for the collection, protection, study, and display of cultural relics in the hinterland of the Central Plain. Henan Museum's present building, which opened in 1997, occupies an area of more than 100,000 square feet, with a total floor space of 78,000 square feet. It is one of earliest museums in China, with 10 thousand collections from many fields. In addition to its collection of human history the museum is also home to many relics of natural history including dinosaur bones and fossils.
In a novel shape, the magnificent main building of the Henan Museum collects more than 130,000 cultural relics, of which more than 40,000 pieces are national treasures of China. Among them, the prehistoric cultural relics, bronze vessels of the Shang and Zhou Dynasties, and pottery and porcelain wares of the various dynasties in Chinese history possess most distinguishing features. Inside the museum, there are basic exhibition halls, specialized exhibition halls and provisional exhibition halls.
The cultural relics of the pre-history period, the bronzes of the Shang (c. 16th- 11th century B.C.) and Zhou (c. 11th century-221 B.C.), the pottery and porcelain wares of the past dynasties and a great number of rock carvings in the museum are of high academic and artistic value. A square wine container with lotus and crane motif used by the royal family in the Spring and Autumn period (770-476 B.C.) is the most precious treasure of the Henan Museum.
